A grassroots initiative seeking to humanize the incarcerated through advocacy, community engagement, and rehabilitation.
South Carolina For Restorative Justice was born in the throes of the year 2020 wherein negligence and systemic failures of correctional facilities nationwide were laid bare to the public's dismay with the onset of COVID-19. Much of the incarcerated suffering was compounded due to the overcrowded, unsanitary and deplorable conditions of state and federal prisons. For the last 15 years South Carolina Dept. of Corrections has been overcrowded, understaffed and unsafe. Many people lost their lives due to poor medical care and non supervision of the most at-risk and hopeless inmates. In June, 2020 loved ones of those incarcerated called for a rally to draw attention to the harsh conditions of the S.C. prison system and the need for change.
Addressing the causes of crime with a holistic approach.
Moving from the criminalization of people incarcerated to humanization. Advocacy for changed processes. Validation of victims' traumatic experience and loss. Healing through human connection and deliberative dialogue. Understanding through truth and reconciliation. Embracing, empathy, compassion, grace and forgiveness.
We aim to ensure that our communities are being re-integrated in the safest way possible.
